TrimTabs Macro Research

  a.

Weekly Personal Income and Consumer Cash Flow Analysis

To understand the health of the U.S. economy, it is essential to understand the financial health of U.S. consumers because consumer spending accounts for about 70% of U.S. GDP. TrimTabs Personal Income and Consumer Cash Flow Analysis analyzes trends in personal income, employment, consumer savings and investment, consumer spending, and consumer debt. To provide the most timely coverage, we track a wide range of real-time indicators:

  • Daily income and employment tax deposits
  • Hourly online postings of new jobs
  • Weekly unemployment insurance claims
  • Weekly flows into savings vehicles and stock, bond, and hybrid mutual funds
  • Weekly retail sales
  • Weekly credit card transactions
  • Weekly demand for revolving home equity loans
  • Weekly mortgage application volumes

In each issue, we use proprietary statistical techniques to analyze this data and explain its implications for the future direction of the U.S. economy and the U.S. stock market.

Monthly Employment Analysis

A strong labor market is the foundation of a healthy economy. TrimTabs Monthly Employment Analysis analyzes twelve proprietary, private, and public employment indicators to gauge the health of the U.S. labor market. The initial monthly estimates of job growth released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) are often inaccurate, and they can be revised as much as 40% to 50% in either direction in later months. Our proprietary methodology, which estimates employment growth based on real-time data, has historically provided a much better assessment of employment growth. In each issue, we explain why the BLS data may be inaccurate, evaluate current labor market conditions, and forecast near term trends.

Funds Flow Research (two components)

Daily Exchange Traded Funds Flow
We track net issuance of ETFs by market sector and by individual ETF - reporting daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly flow. The daily tracking of ETF flow is what makes TrimTabs research unique.

ETFs are expanding dramatically and offer a glimpse into the thinking of predominantly institutional traders, who may be telegraphing a willingness to buy or sell above or below the market. ETF's are used by market participants to change equity positions quickly. We have found them to be the best proxy for what the hedge funds are doing in a real time basis.

Stock index futures related ETFs are a primary proxy for hedge fund sentiment. ETF's are a better proxy for sector flows than mutual funds. Non stock index future ETF's behave more like mutual funds and are a good proxy for individual investors.

Daily Mutual Funds Flow

  a.

Daily Mutual Funds Flow
Emailed daily, estimates equity and bond funds flow in aggregate for the entire Investment Company Institute (ICI) universe of long term mutual funds, and by ICI investment objectives i.e. aggressive growth, growth and growth & income.

We directly track the daily flows of ninety mutual fund families; 1018 equity and bond funds, that have about 15% and 20% of all equity and bond fund assets respectively. We then use those numbers to estimate total flows for all equity and bond funds and reliably forecast the ICI monthly mutual funds flow.

We are the only research firm that publishes daily flows in and out of 18 US equity fund sectors, eight global fund sectors and 22 bond fund sectors.
